Notes: | The Congress of Rastadt (November 1797 - April 1799) was convened to settle difficulties arising from the Treaty of Campo Formio [17 October 1797] between France and the Holy Roman Empire. On 28 April 1799, between 9 and 10 p.m. at night, the carriage carrying French delegates left the city of Seltz in Alsace for the Rhine ferry; half hour later they were attacked - two of the French plenipotentiaries were sabered to death and a third, de Bry, was seriously injured. Archduke Charles of Austria convened a military commission to investigate the murder of the French ministers; the report absolved all Austrian personnel in the assassinations and placed the blame on unknown French émigrés.
