Summary:Typescript correspondence from Jenna Dowds of Wolfhound Press to John Montague in relation to the collection of essays, ‘A Love Present and Other Short Stories', (1997). The letters concern the literary contract, but are mainly regarding the accompanying typescript galley proofs of ‘A Love Present and Other Short Stories’ by John Montague. These are annotated with editorial suggestions from Wolfhound Press Ltd. and amendments by Montague. There are also typescript and handwritten drafts of the essays contained within the collection which demonstrate their development since the late 1970s. They comprise: “A Love Present”; “Above Board”; “The Three Last Things”; “Hometown”; “Lighting”; “Off the Page”; “A Bloody Harvest”; “The Limits of Innocence”; “The Game”; “State Visit”/”Mother Superiors”; “The Limits of Innocence” and “The Prize Giving”. These drafts are also accompanied with some of the reference materials used by Montague for the individual stories.


There is correspondence from various publishers and some publications to John Montague about his short stories. Topics covered within these letters concern: acceptance or rejection letters; payment; literary contracts; and permission requests. The correspondents include: ‘Harvard University Press’ (1978); the ‘New Yorker’ (1982); the ‘Irish Press’ (1983); Chatto, Bodley Head and Cape Services (1983); the Poetry Review (1984); Poolbeg Press (1985); Secker and Warburg; Macmillan Publishing (1987); ‘Irish Times’ (1988); and Porteo Marketing (1989). Lastly, there is correspondence from fellow writers Valentin Iremonger and Brian [Coffey] to Montague about his short stories (1986).
