An album of gilt leather binding embossed with the crest of Edward Smith-Stanley, (1775-1851), 13th Earl of Derby, of original drawings representing John Preston Neale’s view of Irish houses and castles, as engraved and published between 1819 and 1829 in 'Views of the seats of noblemen and gentlemen, in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland from drawings by J.P. Neale' [1st series, 6 Vols. 1818-1823; 2nd series, 5 vols., London 1824-1929]. The volume contains 43 watercolour drawings, representing 39 buildings [four are represented with two views] and includes a handwritten index at the end of the volume. Although the album is undated, the date ‘1832’ features on an image of Carton by the artist within the album. However, this view of Carton was published in 1825 [Vol. II, 2nd Series]. The name of the Seat and its proprietor inscribed on each leave in ink. |
