| Summary: | Lettered with title 'Ease Comfort & Recreation or a Sixpenny Trip to the Rock' [possibly a reference to the Rock of Cashel, Co. Tipperary]. Satirical print featuring a worn-out white horse pulling an open carriage of a group of people in countryside surroundings, one of whom, dressed in black and wearing a black hat appears to be a clergyman; seated opposite to him is a serious gentleman wearing glasses and an overcoat of blue material - inscribed within the plate, (within this illustration on the side of the carriage) is 'Patk. [Patrick] Degnum' [possibly a reference to Patrick Duigenan (1735-1816), barrister and politician who served as an M.P. from 1790 to 1801 for Old Leighlin in the Irish House of Commons and following the Act of Union, in Westminster for Armagh from 1801-1816. He was known for his strenuous opposition to Catholic emancipation]. Beside him sits a man wearing a uniform, a bicorne hat with a cockade and a feather, who holds a sword and appears to be laughing; a young women wearing a white muslin dress, white bonnet and holding a pink parasol is seated opposite. A thin man is seated between her and the clergyman - the young woman appears to be holding her parasol up to hide behind (or block out) a boisterous young man who appears to be standing on the foot-rest of the side of the carriage, singing while holding his hat aloft with one hand and holding a stick [or possibly a shillelagh?] in the other. At the back of the carriage, two men attempt to hang on to the vehicle as it moves, while a small dog runs ahead of the carriage. |
