Summary:After George Cruikshank's "Monstrosities of 1821" [after work by James Gillray], published 20 May 1821 by George Humphrey, 27, St. James's St., London; see BM Satires 14310. This print lettered with title "Fashionables of 1821" with publication line inscribed in plate lower left below design "Pub by McCleary," and inscribed lower right in plate below design "39 Nassau St. Dublin". Social satire depicting those promenading through a park in their best attire, hoping to impress others with their good taste by wearing the latest (often ridiculous) fashion. The women depicted have wasp-like waists (that appear smaller than their neck); their bonnets are large and feather-trimmed. Skirts are full length, bell-shaped and with horizontal rows of trimming near the hem. The men wear trousers that are very wide and full at the hips. All men have extremely high collars and bell-shaped, high-crowned hats. To the right of the scene a Grenadier Guards officer wears a gigantic bearskin hat and long gaiters black walks arm-in-arm with a fashionable lady wearing a dark green dress; they converse with a dandified man whose arm is held by a boy who is dressed in exactly the same fashion. At left a man wears riding breeches and carries a switch and the tops of his boots are buttoned. In the right foreground another dandy wears a greatcoat of shaggy light fur while in the left foreground a poodle, its’ coat extravagantly curled and clipped, trots along (burlesquing those promenading).
