Summary:After James Gillray's 'Gentle Emetic', published 28 January 1804 by Hannah Humphrey, 27 St James's Street, London; see BM Satires 10304. Lettered with title underneath image "Gentle Emetic” as part of a decorative frame around the print, lacking publication line. Satirical print (an emetic is a medicine taken to produce nausea and vomiting) depicting an man seated on a chair, grimacing, his elbow resting on a wooden table in front of him on which is a basin, a tea-pot and a medicine-bottle (which has a pink coloured substance - the emetic -in it). The bottle is placed at an angle in a small bowl and nearby is a glass with the same pink coloured substance in it. The man is wearing a night-cap, a white shirt, breeches made of blue coloured material and a green and white striped waistcoat which is unbuttoned. Standing behind the man, a compassionate doctor holds his head and appears to rub it in order to soothe him. In the left background is a bed while hanging on the wall in the right background is a framed image of a gentleman posing in the grand manner.
