Summary: | Lettered with title underneath image "The Mother's Hope” with publication line "Pub by Sidebotham Sackville St." within image. Satire featuring the depiction of a young child who is depicted throwing a tantrum - the child is making balls up its' fists, crying and appears to be stamping its' feet. To the left on the ground is a racket and shuttlecock, to the right on the ground is a doll (lacking hair), its' arms projecting outwards while hanging on the wall in the left background is a small delphinium bird cage with a bird perched in it. The child says "I don't like Dolls I don't like Ca[n]ary Birds I hate Battledore & Shuttlecock I like Drums & Trumpets I won't go to School I will stay at home I will have my own way in every thing!!". His mother observing the scene remarks in admiration: "Bless the Baby - what an aspiring Spirit - if he goes on this way he will be a Second Bonaparte!!". Behind her in the right background, another woman holds in her arms a distressed baby who shakes a rattle. |
