| Summary: | See British Museum number 1975,0118.27. Lettered with title below and inscribed within image "I.R.C. [Issac Robert Cruikshank] del." with publication line "Pub. June 1820 by [William] Benbow St. Clements Church [Yard] Strand". Print illustrates a balancing scales (held by a hand emerging from clouds in the sky above) - on one side of the scales an amiable Queen Caroline is depicted seated on a chair; underneath the scale is inscribed "A Good bit of Wood". On the opposite side of the scales is a corpulent and very dismayed George IV - he is surrounded by courtiers and ministers scrambling to weigh him down while above him hang bodies in bags, their heads sticking out. The bags are inscribed "Spies", "Infor[mer?]", "Grape shot" and "Green Bag". Underneath him is inscribed "Rotten Ground". John Bull is depicted standing cheering in the centre of the scene - he says "Well done Caroline! they think to make light of you, but it won't do, I'll see fair play!". In the left background, a group of soldiers toast the Queen, while in the right foreground, one of the party attempting to assist George IV remarks "confround that Bull what a Row he makes". |
