| Summary: | Lettered with title 'The York Explosion - or Battiering and Bumbarding the Tenth!!'. Lacking publication line. This caricature depicts numerous soldiers from the cavalry regiment the Tenth Royal Hussars being blasted into the air by the hot air from a cauldron that has the word "Test" inscribed on the front of it. At left, a servant dressed entirely in blue and wearing a brown cap, uses a bellows, in an attempt to stoke up the fire underneath the cauldron; inscribed on the bellows is "Reformation Bellows". He remarks (in a speech bubble) "This is Battiering them with a vengance [sic, vengence] / their insolence will soon get a fall, and the Devil may then get his share!". To the right of the cauldron stands Frederick Augustus, Duke of York, in profile in uniform. He is putting scrolls of documents into the fire under the cauldron - some of are entitled "Conduct of the Tenth", "Complaints", "Batti's Report", "Irish", while on the ground near his foot is another document entitled "Complaints" and a "Letter". He says: "I'll supple the Lads, / I'll marshall them, & / soon make them Dance!". [William Battier, a cornet (the third and lowest grade of commissioned officer in a British cavalry troop, after captain and lieutenant) in the 10th Royal Hussars regiment was insulted in the officers' mess of the 10th Royal Hussars; statements and counter-statements were issued by those involved, with the result that the subject and the regiment were subjected to much negative comment in the press and featured in contemporaneous caricatures. Battier was subsequently involved in a bloodless duel with Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854) in Battersea, 12 May 1824]. |
