The scene is a lake in a snow-covered landscape with two men in the foreground striking attitudes while they skate on the ice of a frozen over lake. At left, the man has his hands on his hips and holds out his right foot, while observing the man adjacent to him on the ice, who bends his knees and has arms extended. he former wears a spencer [a short top coat, without tails] over another coat, the latter a tail coat of green coloured material; both men wear their ice-skates over their Hessian boots but those of the latter, who is more somewhat more fashionably dressed, reach to the knee and are they are tasselled; while both men hold sticks. In the right background, two men with folded arms skate back to back (appearing to do a figure of eight on the ice), while in the middle distance another man skates forward with his hands on his hips.
