| Summary: | After George Cruickshanks' 'Monstrosities of 1822', published on 19 October 1822 by George Humphrey, 27 St James's Street, London (which featured a promenade of 'fashionables' in Hyde Park with the Achilles statue at centre); see BM Satires 14438. Lettered with title within image, "Monstrosities or Fashionables of 1823” with publication line: "Pub. by McCleary Nassau St.”. Crowds of people are depicted promenading through a park, two toy dogs play in the centre of the scene while buildings can just be seen in the left background. In the foreground, two dandies and two women advance towards one another – the women advance with pointed toe, drawing up their long frilled skirts in front of them, while one of the dandies ogles them through a monocle present in the handle of a riding-switch. Both men and women depicted have small, wasp-like waists; the men’s trousers are very inflated at the hips; hats are tall, bell-shaped and worn at an angle. A soldier is depicted in the right background of the crowd while a man in the left background appears engulfed in the huge cape he wears – with only his nose and eyes visible.
