| Summary: | Etching clearly inspired by James Gillray's 'Progress of the Toilet.-Dress Completed.-Plate 3', published on 26 February 1810, by Hannah Humphrey, 27 St James's Street, London; see BM Satires 11610. Social satire featuring the depiction of a woman, who is wearing a wig of tight curls loosened to simulate natural [short cropped] hair. She stands facing her reflection in a full length mirror; putting on a long glove. Another glove lies on a stool below the mirror. She wears an high-waisted dress of sprigged muslin, with a low cut bodice and draped shoulder-straps. A pendant hangs from her neck, above her left elbow is a bracelet. Her maid stands behind her, holding a patterned shawl and a fan, a hand held up as if in admiration at the result of her labours. On an adjacent table is an open box that has a label on the inside that reads 'Patent Wig', a dainty bottle and a comb and a hair-brush. A small white dog stands on a chair, gazing at its mistress while nearby on the carpet lies an open book 'Gallery of Fashion dedicated to the Beau Monde', open at a fashion-plate depicting two ladies walking [a reference to Nikolaus von Heideloff's monthly 'Gallery of Fashion', published between 1794 and 1803, that contained hand-coloured etchings and aquatints]. In the left foreground is an open trunk with an outfit [a shirt?] hanging out over the edge of it. Beside this is a dressing-table with several containers, bottles and pieces of jewellery on it. Hanging on the wall is a framed picture entitled 'Evening', depicting a lady in an evening gown, seen from behind, feathers in her hair, holding a fan. Below this hangs a large ornate bag or reticule. A small book-case hanging on the wall is open, with a key in the lock. It contains many volumes, the spine titles of some can be seen - two volumes of 'Delphine' [a controversial epistolary novel by Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein, that examined women's status and their limited freedom in an aristocratic society; following its' publication, Napoleon exiled the author for the political views expressed in it] and a volume of 'The Monk' [a controversial supernatural gothic novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis]. |
