A vote for the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland which introduced a constitutional ban on abortion by recognising the right to life of an unborn child was effected by the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution Act in 1983, [approved by referendum on 7 September 1983] and was signed into law on the 7 October of the same year.
