Letter to Lord John Russell from the Rev. James Hughes, P.P., Claremorris.
James Hughes, Parish Priest, Claremorris, County Mayo.
|Main Creator:||Hughes, James d. 1852|
Letterpress broadside poster, [black font printed on buff paper], an open letter from the parish priest of Claremorris Co. Mayo to Lord John Russell, implying (through an analogy) that a show of armed force by Irishmen may be necessary to secure the repeal of the Act of Union and with reference to the fact that his sentiments are similar to those espoused by those in Young Ireland, ending "These my lord, are the opinions of an Irish priest. Pius IX conceives that there may be cases in which the extreme argument of arms is the only one that is just - the only one that is possible". [Pius IX served as Pope from 16 June 1846 to 7 February 1878].
