A copyright symbol is printed at bottom right of the poster - "Copyright - Universal Hypocrites Ltd. Dublin 8, Maynooth. All unnatural reproduction strictly prohibited". A border in green, white and orange frames the poster. Charles Haughey, Minister for Health introduced the Health (Family Planning) Act, 1979 to allow contraceptives to be available, only by medical prescription, "for the purpose, bona fide, of family planning or for adequate medical reasons". Contraceptives could only be dispensed by a pharmacist on the presentation of a valid medical prescription from a practising doctor and those who had moral objections would not be obliged to write or fill such prescriptions. This came into effect on 1 November 1980. The Health (Family Planning) (Amendment) Act, 1985 liberalised Irish law allowing condoms and spermicides to be sold to those over 18 years of age without having to present a prescription; however sale was limited to categories of places named in the act. The Health (Family Planning) (Amendment) Act, 1992 repealed Section 4 of the 1979 act, [as amended in 1985] and continued the provision of contraceptives without prescription, allowing sale to individuals over the age of 17. |
