Summary: | Black and white image on poster of the South African playwrights and actors Winston Ntshona & John Kani. The play focuses on two cell mates in an unnamed prison [based on South Africa's Robben Island], one of whom is granted early release. It is set in the apartheid-era in South Africa. The play was first presented in Cape Town in July 1973 under the title 'Die Hodoshe Span' ['The Hodoshe work-team], after an infamous Robben Island warder who was nicknamed 'Hodoshe' [meaning in Xhosa 'carrion-fly']. The obscure title for the play was chosen as it was illegal to discuss (or make public), information concerning poor prison conditions in South Africa at the time. |
