Summary:The Recruiting Officer is a Restoration comedy written by irish playwright George Farquhar (1706), which follows the social and sexual exploits of two officers Plume and Brazen in the town of Shrewsbury. This poster features the reproduction of a central detail from William Hogarth's engraving of 1733, entitled 'Southwark Fair' (which depicted the annual fair held every September near the Church of St George the Martyr [which lies within the modern-day London Borough of Southwark, on Borough High Street, London]; the fair was noted for its' revelry and debauchery.
