Written by Denis Johnston [under the pseudonym E.W. Tocher], this play was first produced in the Abbey Theatre on 27 April 1931. The play was set in 1927 and concerns an attempt by the IRA to destroy a Free State government power plant. While the attempt fails, the plant is subsequently blown up by accident. The play covers topics such as nation-building, terrorism and war crimes, industrialialsation and the destruction of the environment. It was seen by contemporaries as a critique of what was perceived to be the Free State government's high-handed attitude to local sensitivities during the implementation of the Free State's Shannon Scheme in 1925.
