Notes:These diaries run to 26 volumes, beginning in 1927. They cover Fr McCabe's time in Spain, where he served as Vice-Rector (1930-5) and then Rector (1936-49) of the Irish College in Salamanca. They detail his experiences during the Spanish Civil War and World War II, during which time the College was occupied by a Nazi press and propaganda agency attached to the German embassy in Madrid. McCabe's writings deal also with the conditions in the province of Asturias during the period and reflect his interest in the local people, language, and customs. He also chronicles trips to America, Italy, Greece and to the Festival of Britain in France. The later diaries in the collection deal with the closure of the Irish College in Salamanca in 1949.
