"My chief object, in preparing the following sketch of the Royal Musical Festival recently held in Westminster Abbey, has been, to render it 'useful' and 'correct', as far as regards the arrangements, orchestra, attendance, receipts, expenses, &c. so that it may be referred to, at any future period, as a record which may be depended on: in that light 'only' am I anxious that it should be considered, and not as a critical report. I shall, however, give extracts from the accounts of the performances, &c. which appeared in the various papers at the time, in order that those who had not the good fortune to be present, may form some idea of their grandeur and sublimity."--Address.

"The Royal Musical Festival, recently held in Westminster Abbey, will form an epoch in the reign of their Most Excellent Majesties King William IV and Queen Adelaide, and shed a halo around their honored names ... Through the kindness of Sir Benjamin Stephenson, an outline of a Plan was submitted, on the 3rd of February, by Sir George Smart to Sir Herbert Taylor, to be laid before the King, of which His Majesty was pleased to approve; and on the 5th of February the King honored Sir George Smart with an audience at St. James's Palace, when His Majesty appointed him to conduct the Festival."--Page 2.
