Correspondence of Emanuel Hutchins, of Ballylickey, Co. Cork,
|Main Creator:||Hutchins, Emanuel|
The collection contains two letters to Hutchins from the 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne in which he discusses the Irish Poor Law. There are copies or drafts of letters by Hutchins to Lansdowne; also a letter from Hutchins to a Mrs. Grand and a letter from Mrs. Grand to Hutchins, the blank pages of which have been used by him for writing notes. Included also is a letter from Hutchins's groom in Alexandria to Samuel Hutchins, Emanuel's brother. Some of the other letters are written from Malta and Beirut. Many of the pages are closely written by Hutchins in a cramped hand, difficult to decipher. Some of the pages are undated.
Emanuel Hutchins was born in 1769 in Ballylickey, Co. Cork and was the elder brother of the botanist, Ellen Hutchins. In 1839 Emanuel Hutchins travelled to the Middle East, possibly to buy Arab horses for the 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne. He died in November that year in Damascus.
