Suggested Merrion Square Memorials.

| Summary: | An original artwork [by an unknown hand] featuring a design for two proposed monuments [in the style of two broken columns, the latter a traditional symbol for a life cut short] to be located in Merrion Square, adjacent to the buildings of the Irish government. Inscription on the monument on the left reads 'In memory of 50,000 Irishmen who died in the Great War hoping that Ireland would benefit. They were betrayed'. Inscription on the right hand monument reads 'In memory of the Irishmen [this word is written on an additional piece of paper which has been cut out and pasted onto the sheet, perhaps rectifying an error or a change of mind on the part of the artist] who died for the Irish Republic 1916-1921. They were also betrayed'. For scale, a tram is depicted travelling down the street, at left of sheet. Written in pencil in manuscript hand on verso: "Mr. O'Kelly, 91, [St.] Stephen's Green / Block to Fodhla Printing Co. [Company] / Tuesday morning sure [this underlined] / Double Col. [this scribbled over] about 5" [inches] deep [at] 979 / mounted. 5" [inches] deep on the / Thursday". [While this artwork is undated The Fodhla Printing Company, Limited was established on Tuesday, 18 January 1927]. |
