Bibliographic Details
Summary:Hand-coloured engraving featuring a satirical caricature (by an unknown hand) of a group of officers in British army uniform gathered around a long wooden table in the Officer's Mess; a sign framed on the wall reads 'Rules / to be observed / at this Mess / every Officer...". They are addressed by the Quarter Master (seen from behind) who says to them [in a speech bubble] "Gentlemen, I've paid the Barrack Master for every article, & if the Commanding Officer will not order you to repay me, I will report it to the general". Various men respond to him (each unwilling to acknowledge the need to reimburse him) - one remarks to him "My Servant lost the coal box, I won't pay for it"; another says "I know nothing of the bellows, I suppose that hussey that rob'd [robbed] me of the bank note stole them"; another remarks "I assure you the windows were broke when I took the room" while another says "What a shame to charge a shilling for a key when I could buy one at an old iron shop for three pence". Bottles of wine can be seen on a sideboard on the lefthandside of the room while two small dogs are depicted in the foreground of the scene.
