Summary: | This watercolour depiction of the interior of a cottage has been identified by Dr Claudia Kinmonth as a study for Alfred Downing Fripp's oil painting 'The Cabin Hearth' [for another image by Fripp in the collection of the NLI, see NLI call number PD C161]. A woman is seated breast feeding her baby while to beside her husband is shown in a pose of despair, crouched over an empty cradle which is made with a wicker framework on a wooden base. The room is lit by a candle sconce on the left. A young boy huddles near the dying embers of a fire above which hangs an article of clothing on a brace. A framed image of a madonna and child hangs on the wall behind the woman. On verso, in black chalk is the figure [of a woman?] seated on a rock with two other figures lightly outlined. |
