| Summary: | Twentieth century reprint by the Soman-Wherry Press Ltd., for Her Majesty's Stationery Office of an original 1914 British women's suffrage poster issued by WPSU [the Women's Social & Political Union], criticising the Prisoner’s Temporary Discharge (for Ill Health) Act and printed and published by David Allen & Sons Ltd., Harrow, London. The original poster is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of London [item number 50.82/1113a] and was given to them by the Suffragette Fellowship in 1950. The 'Prisoner's Temporary Discharge for Ill-Health Act' of 1913 meant that imprisoned suffragettes on hunger-strike could be released because of ill-health, but could then be re-imprisoned once they had recovered. This 'letting them go; then catching them again' earned the measure the popular title of 'The Cat and Mouse Act', a satire of a cat’s habit of playing with mice before killing them. |
