| Summary: | The Irish Woman’s Right to Choose Group was founded ca.1980 and produced a number of publications. This calendar for 1981 [black font on yellow background] features at top an image of Charles J. Haughey (1925-2006) holding a document that has the words 'Family Planning Act 1980' written on the cover; he is depicted smiling, in conversation with Cardinal Tómas O'Fiach (1923-1990) who stands beside him, holding a copy of 'Humane Vitae'. To his right stands a bespectacled male judge [in wig and gown] is holding a copy of a document entitled 'Offences Against The Person Act 1861' while to the left of Charles J. Haughey is a male doctor, wearing a white coat and stethoscope - he holds a publication under his left arm entitled 'All About Pregnancy' by A. Man'. Behind these four figures a large group of men are depicted. The illustator Robert Armstrong was a founder member of the Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin and Head of Painting at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin. A vote for the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland which introduced a constitutional ban on abortion by recognising the right to life of an unborn child was effected by the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution Act in 1983, [approved by referendum on 7 September 1983] and was signed into law on the 7 October of the same year. |
