An illustration of a thatched cottage beside a stream with a red garden gnome in front of the door of the cottage, also painted red is printed under the poem. Seamus Heaney's poem "The Singer's House" was first published in his 1979 volume of poetry 'Field Work' which was published in both England and the United States of America that year.
