| Summary: | Watercolour of landscape near Newtownards, Co Down, painted on one half of a letter [with embossed letterhead 'Belfast' at top right of recto] signed by the artist and dated Brugh, Knockdene Park, [East Belfast] May 6 1922 sent to a 'Mrs Mackie' with a small illustration on verso in black ink of three [Ulster Special Constabulary?] men with rifles, with the words 'in mufti' written in manuscript hand underneath. The artist thanks Mrs Mackie for a cheque she sent to him; he remarks that he was "...in Dublin at Easter and took sketches in Howth where I stayed with cousin Charles Ashenhurst. The Shin Fayners [Sinn Féiners] destroyed the pictures I sent to Dublin. I suppose they don't believe in concilliation....I see the specials [the Ulster Special Constabulary] have camped in a field opposite Mr. Lyons house Newtownards road. He is editor of the Whig and got a threatening letter. The men look better in their new uniform...". |
