| Summary: | Meagher's letters to journalist and writer Edmund Downey of Waterford are mostly written from the Western Front during World War I. Meagher writes of his experiences at the Second Battle of Ypres of April 1915, with a vivid description the evacuation of wounded Allied soldiers to Poperinge and the destruction of Ypres and its neighbouring villages from German bombardments. Reference is also made to conditions in the trenches during the winter of 1915-16. His letters from the front are dated from 16 August 1915 to 15 June 1916. Also included is a postcard, sent from Newcastle Upon Tyne prior to his departure for France which features a photograph of Meagher in a British Army uniform standing outside an army tent (dated 21 Sept. 1914) and letters written from Newcastle prior to the war, dated 27 Nov. 1908 and 27 April 1909, in which he writes of his interest in his forebear Thomas Meagher, his book collection on the Meagher family and business life. |
