| Summary: | Satirical caricature, BM Satires 15738 referring to the passing by Parliament in 1829 of the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829 which saw the repeal of the Test Act 1672 and the remaining penal laws which had been in force since the passing of the Disenfranchising Act of the Irish Parliament of 1728. George IV, depicted near a dais before the throne (which is hidden by a curtain) flees to the left, a mitre falling from his head, as the ghost of George III, draped in a shroud, advances from the right, extending his left arm towards his son. He says “Fly you Hypocrite and hide yourself – My rest you have Disturbed – My t---c you have Dishonoured. Your O—h you have violated, and your C---n [Crown] is become a just forfeit to an Injured people!!! George IV looking back, exclaims to the Duke of Wellington 'Oh! Heavens Arthur we're undone!!!'. Wellington and Peel are also depicted rushing away; two chairs are overturned, and a broken crown lies near a torn 'Petition against...signed by 40000'. Wellington, in civilian dress holds the Bill inscribed 'Assent to the Bill GR 1829'; he tramples on a document torn in two, the title of which can just be seen - 'Magna Chr . . .' [Magna Carta]. He says to Robert Peel: 'Up with them all Bob leave none behind to betray us'. Peel, behind a round table from which he snatches up documents, including one inscribed 'Reduction of Churches Bill', says (to the ghost of George III): 'Who the Devil would have thought of seeing you'. On the wall behind Peel is a round mirror with candle-sconces topped by a mitre and three small pictures [from left to right] a ruined building represented by fallen columns; a volcano in eruption and an image of a dilapidated church. Lettered with title underneath image: My fathers ghost - or- surrender of right and title. At left is an image of a figure of a man peeping through a hole in a door; beside this is printed: Peeping Tom fect., while at right of sheet: Published for the Proprietor by George Sparks, 14 Lambeth Road. |
