First edition of this successful Italian comedy, performed in Venice in the Academy of the Fool Lovers and then reprinted several times. Giovanni Battista Leoni was an ambassador, playwright and historian as well as a founding member of the second Venetian Academy. His figure has remained unjustly overlooked until the recent monograph by Denis E. Rhodes. He was a close collaborator of the printer Giovanni Battista Ciotti, who published many of his letters, comedies and essays. In several of his pioneering works for theatre, he adopted the nickname Lauro Settizonio. Roselmina was his most rewarding achievement. The play is set in Ireland, recounting an imaginary story about the English court intrigues for ascending to the throne. As the prologue illustrates, the author decided to mix different genres and styles. Hence the unusual and ironic definition as 'tragicsatyrcomedy' ; for, the readers are offered not only love plots and obscene dialogues, but also tragic and moral interjections.
