Notes: | These papers deal with the conveyance of lands in Sligo from the O’Conor Sligo to the French family in the first half of the seventeenth century, as well as with the impact of plantation and the Restoration Settlement. Manuscript items include representations from Patrick French to the Commissioners for Adjudications for Claims and Qualifications of the Irish, as well as records chronicling the various contests over the estate. These disputes involved Patrick, Stephen and Dominick French, Teige O’Conor Sligo, Sir Philip Percival, Sir George Radcliffe, Thomas, Earl of Strafford, Sir Philip Percival, Sir George Radcliffe and Sir Francis Gore, among others. This part of the collection also contains material pertaining to the Dillon estate in Mayo, to Sir Oliver Tuite’s estate in Roscommon, to Dame Sarah O’Connor (neé MacDonnell) and to Eleanor Fitzgerald (neé Butler), Countess of Desmond, who married Donough O’Connor Sligo after the death of her first husband Gerald Fitzgerald, 15th earl of Desmond.
