| Notes: | Martin Blake appears to be the owner of sugar plantations on Saint Christopher Island. St. Christopher Island is now part of a two-island country in the West Indies, called Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is in the British Commonwealth. In the 1750s parts of the island were under British control and parts under the French. Very many captured Africans were brought to the island to work as slaves on the sugar plantations. There is a strong Irish connection with some of the Caribbean Islands, including Saint Kitts. After the Cromwellian plantations there were many landed gentry and unemployed soldiers looking for a place to settle and make money. In additon many Irish were sent to the Caribbean as bonded labourers. Physical description: 1 item (2 pages). more |
