| Summary: | Satirical caricature. Title from caption below image. A young man has just removed his navy blue cape (trimmed with red), it lies on a wooden chair near him; he is depicted standing with his back to a fireplace, warming himself while a waiter enters the room. A table is set for a meal; a longcase clock in the room shows it is two o'clock. Through the window can be seen the mail coach, [written on the side is "Holyhead - London" and "Moran's Hotel"]; a lady is seated within the carriage while a man is strapping mail bags onto the top of the coach. Lettered with title :"Drawn by M.E. / Engd. by Geo. [George] Hunt", followed by four lines of dialogue below title: "Manoeuvring. Waiter! Waiter! - Coming Sir Coming! / What does y'r Master charge for dinner? Four Shillings Sir. And - how much for Supper? Two & Six-pence Sir . /Then d'ye hear - Bring me Supper" and publication line: "Published by Hunt, 18, Tavistock St.t, Covent Garden". 'Moran's Hotel' in Holyhead, Wales in the nineteeth century was a well-known landmark and stopping off point where passengers disembarking from ships that had arrived in the port of Holyhead would stay overnight before 'taking the mail' [coach] and recommencing their journey. |
