Summary: | Original artwork signed "Spex" [pseudonym of the illustrator John Fergus O'Hea] in lower right hand corner for an illustration published on p. 231 of 'The Lepracaun', October 1911 which depicts a monkey wearing a hat (inscribed "J. Bull") attempting to force a cat, (who is wearing a hat inscribed "Pat" and has "ASRSI" inscribed across its' chest) to touch burning coals - it yowls in pain. The coals visible in the grate are inscribed with the words "Irish Trade", "Butter", "Wages", "Eggs", "Bacon" and "Fish". Published caption: Monkey - (John Bull) - " I don't see why I should bur[n] my paws, when I can get a foolish cat like you to do the job." handwritten manuscript note in pencil on verso : I don't see why I should [burn?] my paws when I can get - a foolish cat (an idiot is crossed out) like this to do the job. |
