GianBattista Rinuccini, Archbishop of Fermo in Italy, was appointed papal nuncio to the confederate Catholics of Ireland in 1645, arriving in Ireland in November of that year. He remained until February 1649, being deeply involved in the conflicts among the sharply divided Catholic parties, and between the confederate Catholics and the Royalist forces in Ireland.
