Hammond records attending meetings of the Carlow Town Council, Carlow Union and Workhouse, reports of local politics and evictions, electioneering and conflict during Parnellite split (June-July 1891), attending church, markets, fairs and amateur theatricals, involvement the Young Men's Society and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and his visits to Dublin and London on parliamentary business. Passing reference is made to emigration from Carlow, notably 23 Jan. 1889, concerning large numbers of 'poor people from Carlow and Graigue left by Rail for Queenstown enroute to Buenos Ayres [sic] by free Emigration', charges at the Petty Sessions for 'incitement to Boycotting' (11 Mar 1889), a meeting of the Convention of Tenants Defence Association (5 Dec. 1889), and strike of railway porters and signalmen (25 Apr. 1890).
