A letter of introduction for Edmond Smithwick to Joseph Hume, of 6 Bryanston Square.
Joseph Hume was a radical Scottish politician, who was a leading advocate of Catholic Emancipation and economic reform. He sat as M.P. for Kilkenny from 1837 to 1841, during which time this letter was written. Edmond Smithwick was a member of the prominent Kilkenny brewing family and was four times Mayor of Kilkenny. He was a strong supporter and friend of O'Connell.
