Summary:	Colour lithographic print, featuring the original 1917 painting by Leo Whelan of Thomas Ashe, wearing a kilt, made of green material and playing the uileann pipes. Title in Cló Gaelach underneath image: Tomás Ághas [Thomas Ashe, his name in Irish]. Lithographs such as this were issued in the aftermath of Ashe's death - Ashe was the leader of the I.V. Fingal Battalion which he led into battle with British forces at Ashbourne, Co. Meath in the 1916 Rising; he was sentenced to death but this was commuted to penal servitude; he was subsequently released under the June 1917 Amnesty but re-arrested In August 1917 for sedition and sentenced to one year's hard labour at a court martial in September. Sent to Mountjoy Prison, he and other prisoners started a hunger strike as part of a campaign to be treated as prisoners of war rather than as common criminals; he died as a result of force-feeding on 25 September, 1917. He was the first Irish political prisoner to die on hunger strike.
