| Summary: | Self-portrait by Richard Caulfield Orpen on an autographed and dated signed letter by him sent to an unknown correspondent. Head and shoulders, facing to left, looking to front, wearing a high buttoned jacket [possibly a uniform?], handlebar moustache. Written at left of iillustration on sheet 'RCO [Richard Caulfield Orpen] after William O' [a joking reference to his brother, the artist William Orpen, (1878-1931)]. Underneath the illustration, Richard thanks the [unknown] correspondent he is writing to for the card [they had sent to him] and 'good vibes'. Richard Caulfield Orpen worked as an architect but was also an artist and painter (and the elder brother of William Orpen). He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1888, showing works every year from 1906-36 and contributed illustrations to Percy French's humourous magazine 'The Jarvey'. In 1914 he was appointed a Guardian of the National Gallery of Ireland.
