John Gwynn died [aged 44] at Béthune on 12 October 1915, from wounds received in action near Vermelles on 11 October 1915 - the moment he is injured when a shell landed in the door of the Medical Officer’s Headquarters' dug-out is depicted in this scene. Fr. Gwynn taught at Mungret, Belvedere and Clongowes prior to volunteering to serve as a chaplain on active service - in the first week of November 1914 he was assigned to the 4th class attached to 1st Battalion of the Irish Guards as their chaplain. With NLI stamp on verso, dated '9 MAR 1915'.
