Summary:Portrait in ink by British artist Eyre Crowe of James Carlile McCoan (1829–1904) reading a newspaper. Head and shoulders, in profile, bearded, wearing glasses, depicted with a worried countenance; his left hand [just shown] is holding a newspaper close to his face. Author, journalist (he began his career as a war correspondent for the 'Daily News' during the Crimean war) and M.P. (elected for Wicklow in 1880), McCoan was denounced for disloyalty by Patrick Egan, treasurer of the Land League for supporting Gladstone's Second Irish Land Act, 1881 - The Land Law (Ireland) Act 1881 (44 & 45 Vict. c. 49). Title inscribed in ink at right of sheet underneath image: "J.C. McCoan Esq. M.P. / Sept 1. 1881".
