Portrait of Martin O'Reilly (1829–1904), the blind Irish piper, seated, playing the pipes, wearing a hat. Title inscribed in pencil at underneath image; signed 'J. Hayes Del' [Latin, 'delineavit' - 'drew it'] lower right within image. Following the foundation of the Gaelic League in 1894, Martin O'Reilly took part in various competitions organised by them and others. Eamonn Ceannt writing shortly after O'Reilly's death in his article 'The Irish Piper. Is he Passing?', [published in the 'Irish Independent' in 1907], acknowledged O'Reilly as being amongst the great pipers of Ireland; for a typescript of this article see NLI call number MS 13,069/33/3.
