| Summary: | Mezzotinit engraving of George IV when Prince of Wales, full-length, slightly turned to the right, holding a bow and leaning on a pedestal. Dressed in a dark double-breasted coat buttoned at the chest and breeches with short boots, the Garter star pinned to his chest and the riband across his chest, his hair powdered. Noted this engraving is cropped - for an uncropped version of this mezzotint see British Museum call number Mm,15.81 as in it the Prince's plumed bicorne hat is present on the pedestal, above which is the godess Diana and to the right are his quiver and arrows (these can just be seen in this version). In the background is a rural landscape beyond with a group of men engaged in archery. The Society of Royal Kentish Bowmen was established in 1785 by J. E. Maddocks of Mount Mascal, North Cray; originally there were only eleven members and meetings were held at North Cray. However the following year, membership of this exclusive archery society increased and the venue changed to Dartford Heath where meetings were held every Saturday from May until September and a house on Dartford Heath, known as ‘Bowman’s Lodge’, was fitted out for their use. The Prince of Wales was made president of this Society in January 1789 and this in turn encouraged many aristocrats to join the group.
