| Summary: | Mezzotinit engraving of Catherine II of Russia, known as Catherine the Great of Russia, [born Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg in Szczecin, Poland; then known as Stettin, in Pomerania]. Full-length portrait, standing and facing three-quarter to left, looking towards the viewer, in a ceremonial dress, right arm stretched to side looking to front, wearing ermine, standing in front of throne with Russian double-headed eagle motif (the coat of arms of the Russian Empire from 1721-1917) embroidered on back. On plinth in background, lettered within image is "Te duce nil desperandum", Latin "I do not despair of the leadership", the figure of [possibly?] Bellone [the Ancient Roman goddess of war] is on top of the plinth, spear in her right hand while her shield [or possibly a large medallion] bears an image of Catherine the Great in profile, wearing a crown of laurel leaves. This mezzotint is cropped within plate mark - see British Museum call number 'S,7.96' for similar but uncropped engraving with artists' names, title and scratched publication line below image: "M. Benedetti del 1783 / F. Bartolozzi sculp. R. A Engraver to his Majesty 1785 / Catherine II Empress of Russia / Pubd, as the Act directs, febry. 10. 1785 by G.
