He stands on a raised mound, in profile, left hand on hilt of his sword; adjacent to a flagpole where a large Irish flag is flying that has "I.R.A" written on it. Title taken from verso, where in black ink in the manuscript hand of Joseph Holloway is written: "Original watercolour sketch by Tom Lalor of / Eamonn [Éamon] De Valera 1917".
