Ellen Banim (neé Ruth) and her husband John Banim, (1798-1842), novelist, poet and dramatist with their autograph signatures present underneath - 'Mrs. Banim' 'John Banim'; the signature of the artist 'B. O'Connor' is present on the window-still. She is seated, in profile, reading a book, crinoline skirt and bodice with frills; he is lying on a chaise longue, to front, face directed and looking to right, out of window, wearing coat unbuttoned, waistcoat partially unbuttoned, dark cravat. A view of landscape with a castle [possibly Kilkenny Castle?] in the background can be seen to right of image. Written on verso of mount: "This sketch of John Banin and his wife was in my father's / possession since about 1842 or 43 - it was given him by / Banim, and, as I receollect was etched by J.B. himself. / The signatures are autographs. / R. Lane. 1879.
