Among those writing to Downey are Éamon De Valera, Robert Brennan, Dorothy Macardle, Seán Lemass, Seán T. Ó Ceallaigh, Frank Ryan and Padraic Colum. These letters reflect Downey's political activism in Waterford, notably his involvement with Sinn Féin and later Fianna Fáil and his work as a editor of the newspaper 'The Waterford News' and the journal 'Green and Gold'. Also included is a postcard from George Bernard Shaw, written from Ayot St. Lawrence in Hertforshire.
