|Main Creator:||Farey, B., artist|
An engraving of a view of the Cour d’Honneur [main courtyard], of the Château de Fontainebleau. Lettered below image with title. Having previously been known as the Cour du Cheval Blanc ['White horse courtyard'] after a sculpture of a horse installed there in the 16th century, this courtyard was re-named the Cour d’Honneur in the 18th century. It is also often referred to as the 'Cour des Adieux', in memory of Napoleon I’s farewell speech given to the Old Guard there before his departure to Elba on 20 April 1814. A steel line engraving by T. Owen, from an image drawn by B. Farey under Augustus Pugin.
