Notes:Mrs. Craik, who was a successful novelist, first edited this collection for Macmillan's 'Golden Treasury Series', in 1863. It had ornamental initials, but no plates. The publisher, probably in response to the re-issue of the Cruikshank edition of Grimms' illustrator James Edward Rogers, and created a companion or rival collection of fairy tales for the nursery shelf.
